Phosphoric Acid
Phosphoric Acid
Phosphoric acid is an inorganic mineral acid widely used in fertilizers, food and beverage processing, water treatment, industrial chemicals, and metal finishing. It appears as a clear, odorless, non-volatile liquid with strong acidic properties, making it valuable for both chemical reactions and functional applications.
What Phosphoric Acid Is
Phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) is produced mainly through two methods:
Wet Process
Phosphate rock reacts with sulfuric acid, creating phosphoric acid and gypsum. This method is used for large-scale production, especially for fertilizers.
Thermal Process
Phosphorus is burned to produce phosphorus pentoxide, which is then hydrated to form highly pure phosphoric acid. This is used for food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.
